Join us for another year of Powder Keg fun, as we explore the scenic trails of Lowes Creek County Park.  Choose from a 5-mile snowshoe race, 2-mile snowshoe run/walk or, new this year, a challenging 1-hour snow bike race.  We’re also bringing back the fun-filled Kids & Mascots Sprint for children 12 and under (FREE this year)!  And when you’re not on the trails, warm up with free s’mores and a crackling fire.  Whether you’re a veteran racer, a complete beginner or just a spectator, there’s something for everyone to enjoy at the Chippewa Valley Powder Keg, brought to you by CORBA and Eau Claire Bike & Sport.

Snowshoers can expect a mix of groomed and ungroomed singletrack and doubletrack, with a handful of short-but-steep hills thrown in for good measure.  Medals will be awarded to overall male and female winners and top male and female racers in each age group of the 5 and 2-mile snowshoe races.  Don’t have your own snowshoes?  Don’t let that stop you.  We’ll have some snowshoes on-hand for those who want to try the sport or just join in the fun with their snowshoeing friends. Snowshoes are first-come-first-served, though, so don’t dawdle.

The Snow Bike race will last approximately one hour.  Race format may change depending on conditions, but expect short laps mainly on the trails packed down by the snowshoers who proceed you.  There will be two race categories:  one for fat bikes (with tires 3″ wide or bigger) and one for nonfat bikes (tires less than 3″ wide).  Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each category.

Andy January 2, 2012 at 8:37 pm

Hello. Last year I saw this event on WEAU TV 13 news. It looked cool, so I’m thinking about doing it this year. This is the 1st I’ve actually looked into it. I see the 2011 results above only show the 5 mile race results. Wasn’t there a 2 mile race last year?
Also, I see the website above advertises:
“5-mile snowshoe race, 2-mile snowshoe run/walk.”
Is the only difference between the 2 races that 1 is 5 miles and 1 is 2 miles. In other words, I’m interested in the 2 mile event, but I want to ensure it’s a competitive race, like the 5 mile event. Being that the 2011 2 mile results weren’t listed and that the description above for the 2 mile 1 calls it a run/walk, I just thought I better clarify that they are both the same type of races, just that they are different distances. Thanks!

Andy, the 2-mile was not timed last year, but it will be this year and awards will be given to the top male and female finishers and top finishers in each age group.

I signed up for the 2-mile run. This will be my first time on snowshoes (provided I get there early enough to “borrow” a pair). What kind of shoes should I wear?

Jereme January 25, 2012 at 10:02 am

Jim, there’s a great article at http://www.snowshoemag.com/first-timers/ that covers this question and has a lot of other helpful info for those new to snowshoeing. Short answer: hiking shoes or winter boots if you’re walking, trail running or sturdy running shoes if you’re running. Waterproof is ideal, but not necessary.

Is there a distance or a time length for the snow bike race? Thanks
